Four Stars but with A Ton of Reservations (Revised) December 24, 2009 charlie anderson (Maine) 44 out of 52 found this review helpful
I bought this computer because my HP was 2005 vintage littered with all kinds of software. I really like Ausus & like the idea of an all in one. I have a thing about finger prints on monitors so the lack of touch screen was not a minus. This computer has the NVIDIA ION engine & I like the idea of "enhanced graphics" So what's not to like? The computer graphics are no better or worse than those on my HP I have been using. That computer had Intel enhanced graphics & a top of the line Samsung monitor new in 2008. I expected the Asus to run circles are the old computer but they are about equal which is excellent graphics rendering. And the Asus-with its Atom processor dual core still strains in ripping CDs. It has a nice internal speaker system-better than average but not exceptional. So the bottom line is that this computer is aethetically pleasing but its performance is nothing special. I guess my expectations were higher than what was delivered. But the kicker was that the computer's over all performance was no better than what I already had. So the computer is fine but so is my software cluttered old computer. UPDATE: When I reviewed this computer-I was unaware that the C Drive Partition on this computer was 40 Gig. The Data Partition was 250Gig. That is How this computer was set up by Asus at the factory. By defualt-Programs you download go to the C- Not the D partition. Who cares? If you own this computer-you will. What happens is that the C partition is way too small, and overflows. Asus Tech support stinks and they offer no remedy. You can repartition but you need to download third party software. I would NOT buy this Asus model under any circumstances. One star if I could re-rate this review.
Very good value. March 3, 2010 solaas (USA) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this computer primarly for the kids to get internet access, elearning and watching TV. And after 2 weeks feedback, I conclude that it's perfect for that. Before I bought it I looked at the 2 reviews that were there and they are correct (thank you guys): this PC is not a super-killer beast, but it does the job fine. Beautiful screen, brights graphics, nice look (my wife who is on the Mac side was expecting a gray industrial box and was I think pleasantly surprised - and the kids as well). The price is right . It installed very easily (meaning, the kids - 9 and 7 - turned on the power, put batteries in the mouse and keyboard, and it went). It even recognised my printer without me installing drivers etc... The camera works very well, the loudspeakers and mic we attached as well. Only good surprises. ( I might have low expectations - my background is 20 years of usage of various unglorious corporate PCs and their "liberated" cousins that we bought back from our employers to use at home. So I might be easy to impress!) Btw, it is not mentioned in the specs, but of course it comes with a wifi adapter. It also comes with Windows 7 (apparently there was debate on that at some stage). My only grudge is that - as stated in another review - the disk partitioning is indeed insane. It goes beyond the problem of storing programs : because all the Windows users are in the C: partition, all the docs are piling in a small C: 40Gb and the D : 250 Gb partition sits unused. Anyway, I rate it 5 stars, for less than $600 it's a good deal and here at home we all like it.
Just worth its price. But don't trust ASUS March 1, 2010 Jinhong Shin 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've been using this product for more than a month. I think it's just worth its price. I'm quite satisfied with this product for most aspects, but let me tell you something. Atom is an Atom. Every recent software requires more and more resources. For the most of the works, you may not find any difficulty, but the delay I always feel when I scroll a webpage with Firefox is really annoying. Do not expect too much on this low-end CPU. However, it has quite a good graphic card, that it doesn't have any problem with full-resolution movie or Google Earth. I don't know about 3D games, 'cus I don't play any of them. This is critical part. This model comes with a beautiful wireless keyboard and mouse. They're cute, and some say they got some kind of design award. I can agree on that. But one day they stopped working. I tried every way I can find on the web, but they never got back. I could send them back to ASUS support, but I know them. It takes more than a month to get my computer back. And they don't tell us anything about what the problem was, and what they actually fixed. I suffered it with my ASUS netbook. When it comes back from the support, it gets another problem. No, I'll never send my computer to ASUS support unless I have a real critical problem with it. So I just bought a new keyboard and mouse. Otherwise, it's fine. Bright wide display and good performance with reasonable price. What else do you need?
A nice all-in-one for people that just surf and email July 21, 2010 N. Wienke 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A perfect computer for those who only surf the internet, email, use office apps. No this is not a gaming pc, as one can see by looking at the basic specs this is not high performance hardware. But if solitaire and facebook games are your style then you're set. The hard drive partition is great, maybe would of went to 60gb for the OS but if you're going to be running a windows OS then you DEFINITELY want your programs and data on a separate partition. That is if want to keep them after the inevitable crash/virus that requires the standard microsoft re-install strategy. It is very simple to install a new program to a different drive, 99% of the installs give you the option of what path to install in. and of course saving pictures, videos, and downloads to another drive is as easy as not selecting c: as your save point. I can't recommend how much you should at all cost never save anything to the c: drive (OS drive) that you want to keep. Includes everything a standard user needs and in a nice thin package; pleasant vibrant screen, very nice built in camera, memory card reader, etc. The HDMI input is a very nice feature so the monitor can double as a TV (if you use a separate box of course, no tuner card here)
Smart configuration at a good price. July 22, 2010 MC in WV (4.5 stars) You will be hard pressed to find a complete home PC for less than $500, all-in-one or otherwise, that performs better than this one. Not particularly fast or suitable for intense/3D gaming, but good enough to efficiently serve the average user. The dual core processor allows for multitasking and the NVIDIA Ion graphics will smoothly stream HD content. Both functions are rare in all-in-ones at this price point, which generally feature single core processors and lesser graphics solutions. You also get a 20" 1600 x 900 HD screen, draft "N" wifi, 30 fps webcam w/light sensor & mic, premium sound system, DVD Super Multi Drive, 5-in-1 card reader, 4 USBs, and HDMI. The hard drive partition some reviewers have complained about is actually an excellent design. ASUS obviously didn't figure users would be so inept as to not be able to send downloads to the D drive instead of the C (you are offered a choice), or to move it from one to the other. These are very simple tasks. The C drive is where viruses attack and it is a GOOD idea to keep your personal data out of there. If this is really a problem for you, free 3rd party software is available for easy repartitioning. The keyboard and mouse are a little flimsy, but minor drawbacks considering everything else offered. Real multimedia support is extremely rare for an entry level all-in-one, and this is the best value on the market. An extra GB of RAM can be had for around $20 and is recommended (32 bit will only read up to 3.2 GB total).
